Koshi Tappu Wildlife reserve lies in the eastern part of the country. Koshi tappu jungle safariIt is named after the famous river the reserve is also listed in the Ramsar site. Established in the year 1976, it covers an area of 175 sq km. Koshi Tappu is a rectangular shaped reserve, approximately 10 km wide and 10km long, stretching northward form the Nepal/India border along the Sapta-Koshi River. Lying in the flood plain of the Koshi river the reserve provides the great opportunity for the sightseeing and bird watchers.

Most of the visitors come here in the search of the Bengal florican and the flamboyant sarus, cranes. The reserve and the adjacent area support more than 350 bird species even migrated for the breeding. Globally threatened species occurring in this area include Black-necked Stork, Greater Adjutant Stork, lesser Adjutant Stork, Baer’s Pochard, Red-necked Falcon, Bengal Florican, Great stone Plover, Black-bellied Tern, Dusky eagle Owl, Swamp Francolin, Marsh Warbler, etc. The month between October and April is the best time to explore the wilderness of the bird when you can observe more than 100 species in a single day. Not only that the Koshi river supports more than 100 species of the fishes, dolphins including the human size catfish known as Gonch. The park was originally established to preserve the remaining wild buffaloes so that you can also have the glance to the interesting wild buffaloes as well as the lot of the wild species in this region.
